Thieves prey on Bellingham homes, cars and stores for the holidays

BELLINGHAM – ‘Tis the season has become ’tis the season to steal.

From late November and throughout December, police typically see an increase in thefts, ranging from vehicle prowls to burglaries, and this year is proving no different, said Mark Young, Bellingham Police Department spokesman.

During Thanksgiving weekend, the unofficial start to the holiday shopping season, Bellingham Police responded to 21 burglaries, 14 vehicle prowls and nine reports of shoplifting, numbers that almost doubled from the same time period one week earlier, according to police records….Read more

    Record Number Of Guns Exchanged For Gift Cards

    Los Angeles (NPR) — It’s a holiday tradition in Los Angeles: Gifts for Guns. In the weeks before Christmas, the Sheriff’s Department offers gift cards in exchange for guns — mostly as a way of disarming gangs. The recession has many more gun owners seeking those $100 gift cards from Target, Best Buy and Ralphs supermarkets. The number of guns turned in this year is up 50 percent — 965, plus two hand grenades. [I seem to recall a rocket launcher in a previous year].
